Older tenants releasing equity

  • 12% of tenants who moved into new privately rented homes since the beginning of 2018, were previously living in the owner-occupied sector.

  • Unsurprisingly, this percentage is much higher for older tenants. 36% of 50–60 year olds and 42% of over 60s were previously living in owner-occupation before choosing to release equity and move into rented accommodation.

  • Meanwhile, almost half of moves (47%) were from tenants moving from other rented homes, either in the private or social sector.

  • Dataloft has recently acquired a new rental dataset which provides even greater opportunities for investigation into the private rented sector. Keep a look out for more in coming weeks.
